AN OVERVIEW OF BIDOUP-NUI BA NATIONAL PARK (2)

Decision to establish: Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park was established in accordance with Decision No 1240/QĐ-TTg dated19/11/2004 by the Prime Minister to promote Bidoup-Nui Ba Natural Reserve  to Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park.

Geographical location: Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park (BNBNP) is located in Lac Duong district and one part of Dam Rong district, Lam Dong Province. The park is about 50km from Dalat city on inter-provincial road 723. When Dalat is designated as a city under the direct authority of the central government, BNBNP will be situated in the expansion area of Dalat City.

 

Coordinates: 12°00′ to 12°52’N, 108°17′ to 108°42’E.

Total area: The core zone covers 70.038,45 ha consisting of:

  • Strictly Protected Zone: 33.582 ha;
  • Ecological Restoration Zone: 22.854 ha;
  • Administrative and Service Zone: 7.502 ha;
  • And the rest: 6.100,45 ha

 

Management level: The Management Board of Bidoup-Nui Ba national park is under the direct authority of Lam Dong people’s committee. The management board of the natural reserve was established in 1986 and then promoted to the management board of national park in 2004.

Organizational structure:

The Board of Director consists of  one  director and three deputy directors.

+ Department of  Technical  & Scientific Research 
+ Department of Finance;
+ Center for ecotourism and environmental education;
+ International center for tropical forest research.

Human resources:

The total number of staff of Bidoup-Nui Ba national park is 108 of which 44 have university degrees; 04 master degrees; 44 forestry intermediate degrees, 11 elementary degrees, 5 untrained.

Tourism activities:

BNBNP is rich in biodiversity and beautiful natural landscape with many waterfalls, which is favourable for ecotourism development. Currently, a plan is being formulated to establish the Center for Ecotourism and Environmental Education as the legal basis for cooperative investment by local and foreign organizations and individuals in the field of ecotourism development and environmental education.

Biodiversity values:

Bidoup – Nui Ba National Park is one of twenty-eight national parks in the system of special use forests in Vietnam. Bidoup-Nui Ba area which belongs to the administrative boundaries of Lac Duong district, Lam Dong province covers almost the entire Langbian plateau (also called Lam Vien Plateau). The area is evaluated by scientists as one of 221 Endemic Bird Areas of the world, and one of four centers of biodiversity in Vietnam (namely Hoang Lien Son Mountain in the North, Ngoc Linh mountainous area in central Vietnam, rain forest area in northern Central region and Lam Vien Plateau in the South). In the programme of ecosystem conservation of the Truong Son range, the park is defined to be in the massif of Southern Truong Son range and the first priority for conservation (SA3). Ninety-one per cent of the total area (63,938 hectares) of BNBNP is covered with forests and forestland where the dominant primeval forests are the home for many various animal and plant species.

There are 1933 vascular plant species in BNBNP of which 62 rare species belonging to 29 families are listed in Vietnam Red Book 2000 and Decree No. 32/2006/NĐ-CP dated 30.03.2006 by the Government and IUCN Red List such as Taxus wallichiana, Calocedrus macrolepis, Fokienia hodginsii, Pinus dalatensis, Pinus krempfii. With regard to specific and highly endemic species, inventory results show that There are 91 species distributed in Lam Dong Province and adjacent areas. Twenty eight species are Latinized as the origin of species generation, including dalatensis: 9 species, angbianensis: 14 species, and bidoupensis: 5 species. The numbers of valuable, rare animals listed in Decree No 32/2006/NĐ-CP, Vietnam Red Book 2007 and IUCN Red Book are 56 (accounting for 27 % of the total number of  species in the area) , 47  (accounting for 22.5 % of the total number of local species);  30 (accounting for 14.4 % of the total number of animal species) respectively, for example the Pygmy Slow Loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus),  the Black-shanked douc (Pygathrix nigripes) , the yellow-cheeked crested gibbon (Hylobates gabriellae), the sun bear (Ursus malayanus), the moon bear (Ursus thibetanus), the golden cat (Catopuma temminckii), the asian elephant (Elephas maximus), the Dhole (Cuon alpinus), the gaur (Bos gaurus), the  wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee), the  gorals (Naemorhedus sumatraensis), and the tiger (Panthera tigris).

BNBNP is also evaluated as the kingdom of orchids with over 250 species.

Population in the area: There are 17,051 people of 3100 households living in Lat ,  Da Sar , Da Nhim , Da Chais  Dung K’No commune and Lac Duong Town of Lac Duong district and Da Tong commune of Dam Rong district, Lam Dong Province. Ethnic minorities account for 92% of the population.
